It's not peak rumor season yet, but some more New Jersey Devils tidbits have been coming out this week. General manager Tom Fitzgerald sat down with Mike Morreale yesterday to discuss many things, including the 10th overall pick. And he also talked with Pierre LeBrun.
Let's review what he had to say to Morreale and LeBrun and try to get a sense of where the Devils may be heading this offseason.
It'll Take Something Significant to Trade the 10th Overall Selection
In his sitdown with Morreale, Fitzgerald said he was open to trading the 10th overall pick and said similar to LeBrun, too:
“Yeah, for sure. I’m more than willing to move the pick for the right asset. One that we control, one that’s probably in the same demographic as our team — maybe not 23, 24 years old but somebody we control for a few years."
Fitzgerald said it would have to be something significant for him to move the 10th overall pick, which shouldn't be a shocker. I wrote earlier this offseason that the Devils' best option with the 10th pick is to keep it and make the selection, and I stand by that.
Based on Frank Seravalli's first trade board of the offseason, it doesn't look like there'll be many players worth trading the 10th pick for, including goalies. Jacob Markström should not cost that pick, nor should Linus Ullmark. Juuse Saros probably would, but that entire package will likely be a price too high for Fitzgerald.
Obviously, it makes sense to listen and call about the 10th pick to see what's out there. You never know what comes together over the next four weeks, but I'd be surprised if the Devils traded it.
Markström & Ullmark Are Top Targets
Speaking of Markström, LeBrun reported that Markström would be willing to waive his no-move clause for the Devils. That's also not a surprise, as the Devils and Calgary Flames nearly pushed through a deal for the Swedish goaltender just ahead of the trade deadline.
LeBrun reported other league sources said Fitzgerald continues to show interest in Markström, so expect rumors about him to gain traction over the coming weeks, leading to the draft on June 28-29.
If the Devils don't acquire Markstrom, Ullmark will be high on their list. LeBrun said there are other possibilities for the Devils in net, but Markström and Ullmark are their top two targets.
