The New Jersey Devils are about to go on a 10-day layoff with the bye week and All-Star break looming. But before then, they'll take on a Tampa Bay Lightning squad that's 8-2-0 in their last ten games. Here are three things to watch.
Devils Need to Start on Time
It's probably not the only time I've written this in a preview this season, but the Devils have to start on time in this one. They gave up the game's first goal for the 33rd time in 46 games against the Carolina Hurricanes in a loss a couple of nights ago.
It wasn't just the first period, either. The Devils came out of the gate slow to start the second against the Hurricanes, giving up two quick goals and putting themselves in a 3-0 hole. Even against a bottom-feeder, it's difficult to come back from a two- or three-goal deficit. But against the Hurricanes or Lightning? Best of luck.
That's why the Devils need to get off to a fast start. They played well against the Lightning the first time they faced each other a couple of weeks ago, completely controlling the game at five-on-five. They just couldn't get saves.
This Lightning team has changed how they've played a bit, though. After struggling defensively to start this season, they've adjusted and are limiting chances at a much better clip.
Over this 8-2-0 stretch, the Lightning are giving up 2.13 expected goals per 60 minutes at five-on-five. They're allowing just 9.18 high-danger chances per 60 as well. Only the Winnipeg Jets and Florida Panthers have given up fewer quality chances across their last ten games.
That's why if the Devils fall behind 2-0 or 3-0 tonight, they could be in for another slog trying to come back. Getting out to an early 2-0 or 3-1 lead could also help the Devils because the Lightning's defensive improvement has been at the expense of their offense; they're averaging only 2.19 expected goals per 60 in their last ten games. That's why a strong start is imperative tonight.
