Devils vs. Red Wings Preview: 3 Things to Watch
The New Jersey Devils head to Detroit to take on the Red Wings to begin a crucial 10-game stretch that could define their season
After another three-day layoff, the New Jersey Devils return to the ice for a pre-Thanksgiving matchup with the Red Wings in Detroit. Here are three things to watch as the Devils look to get back in the win column and rebound from Saturday's disappointing 5-3 loss to the New York Rangers.
Devils Have a Clear Edge at 5-on-5
The Red Wings got off to a hot start but have cooled off significantly since then. Since beginning 5-1-0, they're 3-5-3 in their last 11 games. And their play at five-on-five suggests they're getting deserved results.
The Red Wings have an expected goals share (xG%) of 47.4 percent across those 11 games, and they've been quite leaky defensively, giving up an average of 2.83 expected goals per 60 minutes.
That 5-1-0 record was a bit of a mirage, too. Alex DeBrincat got off to a scorching start, and while he's still playing well, he has just four points in his last ten games. If the Devils keep him off the board, they should be in good shape.
But even then, New Jersey has a decisive advantage at five-on-five. Their 54.19 xG% ranks fifth in the NHL, and they now have Jack Hughes back in the fold. He looked very good against the Rangers on Saturday in his return from a shoulder injury, and he should have room to roam in this one.
Not only should Hughes be able to control play tonight, but Alex Lyon is the Red Wings' confirmed starter. He's played in just one game this season and has an .897 save percentage. The Devils should get their fair share of quality chances at five-on-five, so they have to take advantage of a goalie who's barely played this season.
