The New Jersey Devils need a miracle to make the playoffs, but that doesn't mean they should throw in the towel on the season. Postseason or not, getting some wins and playing well over their final six games would give them some positive vibes heading what will be a long offseason. That needs to start tonight against the Ottawa Senators.

Mercer Getting a Shot With Meier & Hischier

Based on practice lines yesterday, interim coach Travis Green is shaking things up with his forward lines, at a minimum. Broken up is the Timo Meier, Nico Hischier and Jesper Bratt line, which has been so dominant, and in goes Dawson Mercer alongside Meier and Hischier.

The Devils have pretty much been a one-line team with Meier, Hischier and Bratt together. So, despite their dominance, I get Green breaking them up and trying to balance out the top-six some more.

Meier, Hischier and Mercer got a cup of coffee together when Lindy Ruff was still the head coach, but it did not go well. They posted a 37.95 expected goals share (xG%), though in a small sample size of 32:34. I think it's safe to say, at that point, this trio did not work because Meier was not healthy.

Now, it's a different ballgame. Meier has been on a hot streak over the last two months, posting 16 goals and 30 points in his previous 29 games. Mercer hasn't been his best this season, but he has produced when alongside one of Hischier or Jack Hughes, especially in the past.

Meier, Hischier and Mercer played well in a small sample last season, posting a 71.27 xG%. I'm not sure if they can rekindle that chemistry with just six games left. But with Meier and Hischier playing excellent hockey right now, placing Mercer, whose best strength is as a finisher, alongside them could help spark Mercer and give the Devils a more balanced attack.
