Offer sheets. Could Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway's offer sheets from a year ago have changed the game? New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald seems to think we'll see more moving forward, as does Jeff Gorton of the Montreal Canadiens.

This year's UFA crop is quite weak, so teams could look to the offer-sheet market to improve their teams. You need all of your own picks in the 2026 draft to offer sheet an RFA, which the Devils have, and that could make them a player to tender an offer sheet to someone. Let's look at some potential candidates.

Mavrik Bourque

Part of signing a player to a successful offer sheet is taking advantage of a team that's tight on cap space. That's exactly what the Dallas Stars are dealing with this offseason, as they enter the summer with just over $4.5 million in cap space.

Mason Marchment could be a cap casualty and is a potential fit as a trade target for the Devils, but they could also target Mavrik Bourque for an offer sheet. The 23-year-old finished with 11 goals and 25 points in 73 games this season, but this is a bet on upside like the St. Louis Blues did with Holloway last summer.

Bourque has produced at every level of hockey he's played in. He was a star in the QMJHL and finished the 2023-24 season with 77 points in 71 games for the Texas Stars in the AHL.

Bourque is versatile, as he can play wing or center, something the Devils seem to like in their forwards. If he settles in at center, the Devils could have a terrific one-two-three punch down the middle with Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes and Bourque.

Of course, Bourque has to want to sign an offer sheet, but the Devils could appeal to him. The Blues signed Holloway to an offer sheet at a cap hit just above $2.9 million. The Devils would have to offer Bourque something similar to get the Stars to think about not matching, perhaps in the $3-4 million range annually, but that'd only cost a second-round pick.
