The New Jersey Devils were in a precarious situation entering the third period last night, trailing the Detroit Red Wings 2-1. But they managed to come away with the win and a crucial two points, thanks to Timo Time. Here are three takeaways from the victory.
Meier Looks To Be Turning a Corner
If the Devils are to make a push coming out of the Christmas break, they'll need Timo Meier back at full strength. Based on yesterday's performance, the nearly $9 million-a-year winger seems to be heading in the right direction.
Meier opened the scoring for the Devils, tying the game at 1-1 in the first period. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was a vintage Meier goal, but it wasn't far off.
It started with a good zone entry from Michael McLeod, who fed Dawson Mercer on the rush. Mercer then threw the puck toward the net. The puck squirted loose, and Meier got to the slot and put it in the back of the net from a high-danger area.
Meier's second goal came from Michael Hutchinson not being able to control what looked like a pass, but he'll take the fortunate bounce. Even though he got some puck luck on his second goal, good puck luck is usually the result of making the right play. Michael Rasmussen couldn't corral a bouncing puck in his own end, which Meier pounced on to force the turnover.
Not only was Meier in the right spots, but he was also much more physical than in previous games since returning from his injury. He led the team in shots on goal with five and had four at five-on-five. He added three scoring and two high-danger chances as well.
Meier had good chemistry with McLeod and Mercer. There was one shift where they were hemmed in for a good two minutes, but they were otherwise creating chances in the offensive zone.
If Meier is turning the corner, then better days should be ahead for the Devils. McLeod is the right fit for him if he's not on a line with Nico Hischier, and if it results in Meier leading the team in Game Score more often than not, then expect Devils coach Lindy Ruff to stick with them out of the break.
Devils Overcame Another Slow Start
Slow starts have been a problem for the Devils this season, and last night was no different. They gave up the game's first goal for the 23rd time this season. But fortunately, they never trailed by more than one goal.
