The Anaheim Ducks have dug themselves a bit of a hole.

By not taking care of business with Leo Carlsson, they left themselves exposed to an offer sheet, and the Philadelphia Flyers delivered, tendering Carlsson a five-year offer sheet at an AAV of $18 million.

We’ll see what the Ducks do, but one would have to think they will match; Elliotte Friedman did report the Ducks will match any offer sheet. If so, they will have to clear cap space since Cutter Gauthier is also an RFA, and they need a couple of defensemen.

That’s where the New Jersey Devils could take advantage. The Devils themselves are waiting for an outcome for the offer sheet they tendered to Utah Mammoth center Barrett Hayton.

But once they get clarity on Hayton, they should keep a watchful eye on the Ducks and a cap situation that could be deteriorating. Let’s look at a couple of Ducks players the Devils could target.
